White Rose – Sharing and Caring for the Environment

17th November 2011

A car sharing scheme launched by White Rose Shopping Centre is set to reduce carbon emissions and help save employees hundreds of pounds a year.

An estimated 1,500 of the 3,500 people working at White Rose regularly drive to work and the scheme, believed to be the first of its kind at a major UK shopping centre, offers both environmental and financial benefits.

Craig Barrack, managing director of carbon heroes, whose company specialises in providing bespoke, secure car sharing services for large employers and employment sites, said: “We are working with the centre and have developed a web-based system that enables anybody employed at White Rose to register online and find fellow employees with whom they may wish to share travelling to and from work.”

He added: “As well as offering potential savings of hundreds of pounds a year on fuel and other motoring costs, the scheme helps to reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion, while freeing up parking spaces at the centre. It is also a way of making new friends.”

White Rose has been recognised for best practice in areas ranging from waste minimisation to rain water harvesting and centre director Peter Cook, pointed out: “Car sharing provides another means by which we can work together to lessen our impact on the environment.”

To encourage take up of the scheme employees who join before 16th December have the chance of winning a £150 White Rose gift card.
